ARTS & CRAFTS HOLIDAY COURSES 2003

ON THE ISLE OF MULL, INNER HEBRIDES

The Studio offers courses with tutors who have been demonstrators at ART IN ACTION from beginners’ calligraphy, painting and drawing to specialist applied lettering courses.  Apart from the dates of the courses listed below, students may be taught one to one, in pairs or trios: engraved lettering on glass, clear or stained; beginners’ courses in Foundational Hand, Uncial, Gothic or Italic; historical hands for local historians or family history researchers including Scottish secretary hand and pointed minuscule.

The resident tutor, Mrs. Charles-Edwards, trained as a graphic designer and letterer 1963-7. At Cardiff Art College she came under the influence of the lettering historian  J.C.Tarr. She took a Masters’ degree by thesis on the inscriptional lettering of the early Christian period. She worked as a University Press designer in Ireland until moving to Oxford in 1975. She has been an Adult Education Tutor since 1979, and demonstrated lettering on glass at ART IN ACTION from 1980-1996.

Under her maiden name of Gifford Lewis she has published biographies of some of the women artists and writers of the Celtic Revival: Somerville and Ross, Eva Gore-Booth and Elizabeth and Lily Yeats.

She has spent most of the year at her home on Mull since 1989 and in 1993 began to teach a Celtic Calligraphy course on Iona every August In 1997 she designed and wrote the palaeographical section of the exhibition to celebrate the 1,400th anniversary of the death of Saint Columba, a copy of which is now exhibited in the Heritage Centre on Iona.

Painting Courses (Tutor: Monica Horn, ARCA) (now at Innemore)
Monica is a graduate of the Royal College of Art Painting School, winning the David Murray Landscape Scholarship on graduation. She worked for St.Clare's Oxford, teaching American University students to paint. Besides this she has taught in Venice, run her own Summer School in Oxford and has extensive experience of teaching in Adult Education. She has recently moved to Somerset to paint, and in 2000 ran painting holidays on Exmoor as well as teaching for a week in Mull, opening for her house to the public for Somerset Art Week, and receiving a bursary from Walk in the Land of Light to produce digital art for their exhibition.  Her chief mediums are acrylics, oil pastels and watercolours, with occasional excursions into oils and pastels. She has exhibited at the RA Summer Exhibition, the Museum of Modern Art, and is a member of the Oxford Art Society.

LETTERING ON GLASS FOR BEGINNERS

Basic strap italic and how to apply it. Two pieces may be completed in the week. Machinery supplied. Students are to choose their own work pieces.

LETTERING ON STAINED GLASS
24th-28th June 2002

Etching and drilled work. One day for the design and lettering of a single project completed in five days. Pieces may be assembled and leaded within the week. 

MAXIMUM of three students.

A five-day course. Four hours a day in the Library, Iona. Two days on the half uncial hand of the Book of Kells, a day with a slide lecture on Iona manuscripts and their relations and a tour of the Abbey stones collection, and two days on the pointed minuscule hand of the Book of Armagh. 
Mrs. Charles Edwards demonstrates on the board with chalks and at each  students’ desk.

CELTIC CALLIGRAPHY ON IONA
4th –8th August 2003

MAXIMUM number eight students Accommodation on Iona, from B&B to hotel should be booked well in advance.   Course fee £50.

Lettering courses at the Studio for one to three students may be taken with self catering accommodation for  £200 , courses for larger numbers require the students to arrange their own accommodation which may be done easily through the Scottish Tourist Board
